I give up trying to discern any vocational issue by thought. Yesterday during an Adoration I realized that the time spent trying to pick apart a decision is just time wasted. This applies only if the discernment vocational. God is the one that will make all determinations of my/your/our vocation/s and I see no point in torturing the mind over any decision that ultimately is up to God.
Make up your mind that whatever turns out to be…will be. It is so easy to get caught up in discernment that you miss what is directly in front of your face, this little ringing phone from God, saying, “hello, I’ll deal with this. Thank you, but no help needed.”
Of course each of us does have a part to play in discernment but not the main part. The only part available to us is to say yes, or no. That is all. We should always go the well marked paths of discernment from tradition, but there does come a time where faith must enter and take charge, answer that phone and say, “Yes, Lord, whatever you determine I will do.” It is dangerously close to that cliche of “let go and let God.” Dare I risk another cliche and say if the shoe fits wear it?
